About Social aspect >
Till the turn of the 20th century, Ganesh Chaturthi [festival] was celebrated only in homes and temples. In 1896 when India was struggling for independence. To aware and unite people under one aim - "freedom of India" Great freedom fighter & " father of Indian unrest " Shri. Bal Gangadhar Tilak " used this ancient festival and started it on public level.

Tilak thought, rightly so, that a festival like this had the potential to galvanize the public. There was a political message behind it but the British could do nothing as it was packaged in religion.
Once independence was achieved, the political angle behind the event ceased to exist. But the tradition has carried on.
After Independence this festival completed 111 years this year and its being celebrated in the same passion.
